After 27 years of slumber, IT has awoken.
In a few months, Pennywise the Dancing Clown will make his big screen debut, holding out a red balloon and offering a word to the wise: “we all float down here”.
Until then, horror fans everywhere have to settle for the first teaser trailer of director Andres Muschietti’s re-adaptation, released March 29 by Warner Bros. Pictures. And if the trailer is any indication, this movie will be damn scary.
The teaser opens in a setting that has become iconic: Bill Denbrough has crafted a paper boat for his little brother George, who proceeds to take it out into the pouring rain, running alongside the vessel as it races down a gutter stream.
We all know what happens next. The boat sails into a storm drain, Georgie peers into its pitch-dark depths, and meets Pennywise’s sinister, grinning face.
The rest of the trailer deals with Bill and his friends as they form ‘The Losers Club’ in their hometown of Derry, Maine. They each experience encounters with the clown before banding together to research the town’s history, discovering horrific truths.
IT premieres on September 8. Based on Stephen King’s epic 1986 novel, in this version Swedish actor Bill Skarsgard portrays Pennywise, stepping into the iconic shoes previously filled by Tim Curry in the 1990 TV miniseries. Young actors Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs and Jack Dylan Grazer round out the ‘Losers Club’.
The countdown to September starts now. If the trailer hasn’t convinced you, check out what Stephen King himself had to say:
Tread carefully around those storm drains, people. And watch out for floating red balloons.
