This year is still young, but there is a lot to be excited about for music fans.
We’ve already seen full-length efforts from the likes of Ed Sheeran, Drake, Sampha and The xx. Frank Ocean has returned after enjoying the massive critical and commercial success of last year’s sophomore LP Blonde, while Kendrick Lamar dropped his first completed project since 2016’s Grammy Album of the Year nominee To Pimp a Butterfly.
With promised releases still to come from the likes of Harry Styles, Lana Del Rey and Lorde, a list of the year’s best songs I’ve heard so far (and some honourable mentions) seems only fitting.
So without further ado, and in no particular order, here they are.
“Slide” – Calvin Harris featuring Frank Ocean and Migos
This is probably my most subjective pick on the list. Helmed by hit-or-miss British DJ Harris, “Slide” shows off Ocean’s profound influence on everything he touches. Their unlikely partnership has brought a rare subtlety to Harris’ usual style and the feature from two-thirds of rap group Migos adds to the tune’s mellow flow.
“(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano” – Sampha
This one’s a tear-jerker simply because of the sheer emotion in the man’s voice. Accompanied only by one of the most moving melodies these ears have ever encountered, I can say that after hearing this you’ll just want to sit at a window, stare into space and think about life.
“Sign of the Times” – Harry Styles
For all those planning to dismiss the former boy band singer, think again. The lead single from his upcoming debut solo album, “Sign of the Times” shows promising signs that Styles can forge a distinctive and memorable musical identity for his own in years to come.
“HUMBLE” – Kendrick Lamar
The first single from new release DAMN has Lamar asserting his dominance at the top of today’s hip-hop ladder. Musically this is a significant step away from the funky, jazzy To Pimp a Butterfly, emphasising Lamar’s musical and lyrical versatility.
“In Cold Blood” – Alt-J
Following lead single “3WW”, this is another taste of the English three-piece’s forthcoming record Relaxer, due out in early June. There’s a lot to like about this track for fans and new listeners alike, with horn sections and organs creating a retro vibe reminiscent of classic albums from The Beatles and The Doors.
