Winter is here, which usually means pulling out the extra blankets, stocking up on marshmallows and drinking chocolate and staying in bed on weekends.
What about escaping the norm to somewhere you can sit by a fire and look out to rolling green hills or a rainforest?
A weekend escape in a quaint cabin with its own fireplace sounds like something out of a movie, but in the Sunshine Coast hinterland there are a number of places to do just that.
While traditionally a coastal destination, there is a lot on offer on the Sunshine Coast for a cosy weekend getaway, from romantic retreats and luxury stays to farm visits and getting back to nature.
The hinterland region is bustling with family-owned accommodation, each offering its own experience and environment.
Secrets on the Lake owner Aldy Johnston says winter is a bumper time for her.
“All our rooms have glass-fronted fireplaces: some are hanging, some are free standing,” she says.
“We have people on romantic interludes, honeymoons, anniversaries, birthday, for proposals and special occasions.
“We also have people who want to escape from work because they probably have their own business and are busy.”
Built 20 years ago, the Montville retreat attracts most of its guests from nearby: the south-east corner of the state.
“We have people come who come back for the winter time and consequently June, July and August are very full,” Johnston says. “People can sit in a spa by the fire and take in the view.
“People save up to come because they see it is a special experience you have to do once in your life.”
