Teacher enters not guilty plea to student assault charge

A SUNSHINE Coast teacher accused of assaulting a student has pleaded not guilty to causing them bodily harm.

Andrew James Best, 38, appeared before Maroochydore Magistrates Court earlier today.

Mr Best is accused of punching a Year Nine student at Kawana Waters State College twice in the head on March 12.

The student could not attend school the following day as a result of the trauma.

Mr Best’s solicitor Rose Killip, of Holding Redlich Lawyers in Brisbane, told the court that her firm had received the CCTV footage relating to the incident and had made submissions to the court soon.

She sought a three-week adjournment, but Magistrate Rodney Madsen declined Ms Killip’s request and ordered the defendant to enter his plea.

The case was adjourned to June 17 and Mr Best’s bail was enlarged.
