A man accused of stealing pigs and chickens faced Maroochydore Magistrate Court today.
Floyd Zeke Moynihan was charged with one count of stealing and one count of stealing livestock.
Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist told Moynihan animal activists were not above the law.
“You are not allowed to steal swine on a philosophic defence,” he said.
“We’re not going to be wasting the court’s time by running the vegan defence: ‘We’re going to save the animals’.”
Moynihan’s defence lawyer Chris Lumme said the defence case did not rest on this.
Moynihan is a self-proclaimed vegan activist with a Facebook page dedicated to the cause.
He is co-accused with two others.
The three men are on bail and will face court again on August 27.
